Russian Roulette

My collage for week 16 started with the orange square at the bottom. I saw it in my paper drawer and thought I'd pull out all my orangy papers and see what came together. I am a hoarder of ephemera and all sorts of bits of paper. So out came a font catalog from House Industries (always really cool stuff in there) and on the back was a sample of Neutraface Slab Cyrillic (basically, Russian) in the perfect color scheme. Next I found a wrapper from a chocolate bar that a Russian co-worker had given me. And finally, I used a vintage rubber stamp in cyrillic (no idea what it says) that I purchased from an Etsy seller in Latvia. Rounding it off is a scrap of handmade orange paper, a decorative rubber stamp and the inside of a business envelope (have you ever noticed that business envelopes have a variety of patterns on the inside, some in blue and some in gray, in funny little patterns to thwart thieves?). My Russian Roulette collage is complete!

Collage Week 16

A note about the Russian chocolate bar...the bar is from the Krupskaya chocolate company which was named in honor of Lenin's wife, Nadya Krupskaya. She married Vladimir Lenin in 1898 and from 1929 to 1939 was the deputy minister of education. She died in 1939 and a Leningrad chocolate factory was renamed in her honor. You can read more about her here.

Vintage Find

I found this great vintage coffee pot at my local junk shop. I love the mustard color and am SO tempted to keep it but, I have way to much stuff so it's for sale in my vintage shop, Two Hand Too.

The ceramic bird was purchased from Etsy shop Mungo and Midge and flew all the way to me from Ireland.

Pattern

I love to cruise my local Cost Plus World Market- they always have such interesting things. These papier-mâché bowls were from a special African exhibit. How cool are these patterns!

The bowls are from a South African non-profit, Wala Nani. They are made by women who are affected by HIV and AIDS. A few bowls are still available on the website here.

Wrought Iron Gate

I took this photo down in Venice (California) along Abbott Kinney Blvd. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the shop name. I like the rusty look of the flower.

Another Flea Market Sunday

I can't believe it's September already. What happened to August? One good thing about starting a new month is that the first Sunday is the flea market at Pasadena City College. Sometimes I find a lot of goodies, and sometimes I don't. Yesterday, I found lots to buy. One item was this cute vintage book. It was originally published in 1960 and is called "Corkey's Friend". It is one in a series by Cecelia and Jean Hinde. Corkey's friend is a mouse named Slim (Corkey never actualy makes an appearance in this book and I'm not entirely sure what kind of animal Corkey is since I haven't seen the other books). In this story, Corkey is sick so Slim rides around town on his stick horse and buys gifts for his sick friend at the candy store, pet store and toy store. I was attracted by the cool palette of olive green, teal blue and melon.

Christmas Day Greetings

The colors of this Christmas book are not very traditional, but fit Southern California where today it's 75 degrees and sunny.

The book dates from 1958 and was published by Viking Press. The illustrator, Ilonka Karasz was well known for her New Yorker magazine covers. She also illustrated another holiday book, "The Twelve days of Christmas". Perhaps I'll buy that next year.

Here are a few vintage Christmas cards from my collection. They date from the 1920's to about the 1960's.

The Owl and the Pussycat

I've always like "The Owl and the Pussycat" by Edward Lear. Here is a vintage illustration by my favorite children's book illustrators, Alice and Martin Provensen. It is from the 1965 Childcraft Series Volume 1-Poems and Rhymes. I purchased it as as single page from The Print Makers.

I did this linoleum block version for my 2012 Calendar (Available October 24 in my Etsy shop!) This is just a proof- the final version is in Pea Green, of course.

And here is the poem, in case you have forgotten the words...

The Owl and the Pussy-cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea green boat,
They took some honey, and plenty of money,
Wrapped up in a five pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
'O lovely Pussy! O Pussy my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!'

Pussy said to the Owl, 'You elegant fowl!
How charmingly sweet you sing!
O let us be married! too long we have tarried:
But what shall we do for a ring?'
They sailed away, for a year and a day,
To the land where the Bong-tree grows
And there in a wood a Piggy-wig stood
With a ring at the end of his nose,
His nose,
His nose,
With a ring at the end of his nose.

'Dear pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling
Your ring?' Said the Piggy, 'I will.'
So they took it away, and were married next day
By the Turkey who lives on the hill.
They dined on mince, and slices of quince,
Which they ate with a runcible spoon;
And hand in hand, on the edge of the sand,
They danced by the light of the moon,
The moon,
The moon,
They danced by the light of the moon.

Flea Market Sunday

L.A. has lots of flea markets and the Rose Bowl Flea Market happens the second Sunday of every month. So last Sunday, we got up early, braved the hot sun and went shopping! What I love about going to the flea market is that there is something for everyone-treasures priced from as low as 50 cents on up. After blowing my limited budget, I could only admire and take pictures of some of my favorite things:

Vintage perfume bottles make a statement

Beautiful velvet ribbons in muted colors. This booth had lots of great antique train journals, buttons and lace among other things and all were artfully arranged. The owner also sells on Ruby Lane and you can find her here.

How cool are these antique toys...

I would love a collection of these stools..the colors are so fun!

Here is a newish addition to my children's book collection purchased from Etsy seller booksmusicnmore-The Fireside Book of Children's Songs collected by Marie Winn, musical arrangements by Allan Miller, illustrated by John Alcorn and published in 1966.
